What Screen Mirroring Does (and What It Doesn’t)
Screen mirroring sends what’s on your phone or computer display to The Freestyle in real time. It’s perfect for:
-
Presentations and documents
-
Browsing the web on a bigger screen
-
Showing photos and videos you own
-
Casual gaming or app demos
However, some streaming apps may limit mirroring due to content protection (DRM). When that happens, the app might show a black screen or a warning while audio continues. If you run into this, the reliable workaround is to use the app directly on the projector (Smart Hub) or connect a device using HDMI.
1) Before You Start: Required Setup

1.1 Connect Both Devices to the Same Wi-Fi
For most wireless mirroring methods, your phone/PC and The Freestyle should be on the same Wi-Fi network. This improves stability and reduces lag.
1.2 Confirm Network Quality
Smooth mirroring depends on signal strength more than raw internet speed.
Do this:
-
Place the projector within a strong Wi-Fi zone.
-
Avoid crowded Wi-Fi environments if possible (many routers nearby, heavy downloads).
-
If you notice stutters, try switching your router to a non-DFS channel (explained in Troubleshooting).
1.3 Keep the Projector Stable and Squared
Auto Keystone can help, but extreme angles may reduce sharpness and add processing. For the best mirrored picture:
-
Place the projector on a firm surface.
-
Keep it aligned as close to straight-on as possible.
2) Screen Mirroring from Android (Smart View / Cast)

Android devices may use different names for screen sharing depending on brand—common labels include Smart View, Cast, Screen Share, Wireless Display, or Miracast.
Method A: Smart View (Common on Samsung Android Devices)
This is often the simplest Android mirroring experience.
Steps:
-
Ensure The Freestyle is turned on and connected to Wi-Fi.
-
On your Android phone, open the Quick Panel (swipe down from the top).
-
Tap Smart View (or Cast / Screen Share if Smart View isn’t available).
-
Select The Freestyle (it may appear as a Samsung projector/device name).
-
If a prompt appears on the projector, choose Allow.
While mirroring:
-
Rotate your phone for landscape viewing.
-
Use the phone’s Smart View/Cast settings to adjust aspect ratio or screen fit if available.
To stop mirroring:
-
Disconnect from Smart View/Cast on your phone, or press Back on the projector remote.
Method B: Use The Freestyle Connection Guide (Projector-Side Navigation)
If you prefer following on-screen guidance from the projector:
-
Open the projector’s Home Menu.
-
Go to Connected Devices.
-
Open Connection Guide.
-
Choose Smartphone.
-
Select Screen Sharing (Smart View) and follow the prompts.
This approach is helpful if you’re unsure which mirroring feature your phone uses.
3) Tap View for Quick Mirroring (Samsung Android Devices Only)

Tap View is a fast shortcut that triggers mirroring by detecting a gentle tap on the projector body.
Requirements
-
A compatible Samsung Android device (feature availability can vary).
-
SmartThings app installed and set up.
-
Tap View enabled in SmartThings.
How to Enable Tap View
-
Open SmartThings on your Android phone.
-
Go to Settings inside SmartThings.
-
Turn Tap ViewOn.
-
The first time you connect, the projector may display a permission request—select Allow.
How to Use Tap View
-
Turn on your phone’s screen.
-
Lightly tap the phone on an outer edge of the projector (keep a case on the phone if possible).
-
The projector may switch to your mirrored screen (or to a music visual mode if a music app is running).
Tips for success:
-
Use a gentle tap—don’t knock the projector off its stand.
-
If it doesn’t trigger, try a different edge and keep the phone steady.
4) AirPlay on The Freestyle (Mac Computers)

The Freestyle includes Apple AirPlay 2 support for compatible devices—useful for mirroring from a Mac without cables.
4.1 Turn AirPlay On/Off in Projector Settings
If AirPlay isn’t working, confirm it’s enabled:
-
Settings → All Settings → Connection → Apple AirPlay Settings → AirPlay (On/Off)
4.2 Adjust AirPlay Security (Require Code)
For shared spaces (office, café, family gatherings), requiring a code can prevent unwanted connections.
In the same menu:
-
Require Code:
-
First-time only, or
-
Every time someone connects
-
-
You may also be able to set a custom passcode (depending on firmware).
4.3 Mirror from a Mac (General Workflow)
-
Connect the Mac and The Freestyle to the same Wi-Fi network.
-
Open the Mac’s screen mirroring option (typically found in the system’s control area).
-
Select The Freestyle as the display.
-
Enter the on-screen code if required.
Tip: If you see lag, lower the mirrored resolution or close bandwidth-heavy downloads on the Mac.
5) Screen Mirroring from Windows (Windows 10/11)
Wireless projection from Windows typically uses Miracast (built-in on many modern PCs). The Freestyle can be discovered as a wireless display if your PC supports it.
Method A: Use “PC on Screen” on The Freestyle
This method guides you from the projector side.
-
Open Menu → Connected Devices → PC on Screen
-
Choose Windows PC → Screen Sharing
-
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the connection on your PC.
Notes:
-
Wireless screen sharing support depends on your PC hardware.
-
Windows connection is generally supported on Windows 10 and later.
Method B: Use Windows Cast Shortcut (Fastest)
-
Turn on The Freestyle and ensure it’s ready.
-
On Windows, press Windows + K.
-
Select The Freestyle from the device list.
-
Choose the projection mode you want (duplicate or extend, depending on Windows settings).
If you don’t see the projector:
-
Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network.
-
Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled on the PC (Miracast relies on Wi-Fi even if you have ethernet).
6) Best Practices for a Smooth, Sharp Mirroring Experience
6.1 Reduce Lag and Stutter
-
Keep the router reasonably close.
-
Pause large downloads/updates on other devices.
-
Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi if it’s stable in your room (shorter range, often less interference).
-
Reduce obstacles (thick walls, metal shelves) between router and projector.
6.2 Improve Image Quality
-
Keep keystone correction minimal by positioning the projector straight.
-
Reduce screen size slightly if the image looks soft or dim.
-
Use a clean, matte projection surface for better clarity.
6.3 Choose the Right Audio Path
Mirrored video plus Bluetooth audio can create noticeable delay.
For best sync:
-
Use the projector speaker for casual use, or
-
Use a wired audio setup (such as HDMI eARC to a soundbar) for more reliable lip sync.
7) Troubleshooting: Fix Common Mirroring Problems
7.1 The Freestyle Doesn’t Appear in the Device List
Try this:
-
Confirm both devices are on the same Wi-Fi.
-
Restart Wi-Fi on your phone/PC (toggle off/on).
-
Reboot the projector (power off, unplug for 30 seconds, power back on).
-
Move your device closer to the projector/router.
7.2 Connection Drops or Stutters Frequently (DFS Router Issue)
Wireless sharing performance can degrade if your router uses DFS channels. If you experience unstable mirroring:
-
Open your router settings and disable DFS channels (exact steps depend on router brand).
-
Reconnect the projector and phone/PC after making changes.
7.3 Connected, But No Video (Or Black Screen in Certain Apps)
This is often content protection from the app.
Fix options:
-
Use the streaming app directly on The Freestyle (Smart Hub).
-
Use HDMI from your laptop/console instead of mirroring.
-
For personal/local files, try a different media player app that supports casting properly.
7.4 Audio Plays but Doesn’t Match the Video
-
Avoid Bluetooth audio when watching lip-sync sensitive content.
-
If your audio device supports sync adjustment, fine-tune “audio delay” settings.
-
Keep the setup simple: mirror + projector speaker first, then add external audio once video is stable.
7.5 Tap View Doesn’t Trigger
-
Confirm Tap View is enabled in SmartThings.
-
Use a gentle tap on the projector’s outer edge (don’t hit the lens area).
-
Remove thick phone accessories that reduce vibration transfer.
-
Accept the projector permission prompt the first time.
8) Quick “Which Method Should I Use?” Guide
-
Android phone (Samsung): Smart View or Tap View
-
Android phone (non-Samsung): Cast / Screen Share / Wireless Display (name varies)
-
Windows laptop: Windows + K (or PC on Screen guidance)
-
Mac computer: AirPlay 2 (enable AirPlay settings first)
-
High-quality streaming playback: Use Smart Hub apps on the projector or HDMI instead of mirroring
